Mining Vacuum Filter | Disc & Belt Vacuum Filter for Mineral Concentrate Dewatering

1. Product Overview

The Mining Vacuum Filter is a continuous solid-liquid separation machine designed for large-volume mineral slurry dewatering. Using a vacuum pump to generate negative pressure, slurry is drawn against filter media (cloth or mesh) on rotating discs or belts. Water passes through the media into the vacuum system, while solids are retained as a filter cake on the disc or belt surface. The cake is then continuously scraped off by a discharge scraper and transported away for concentrate sales or tailings disposal.

Unlike filter presses which work in batches, vacuum filters operate 24 hours continuously, making them ideal for large-tonnage mineral processing plants. Our disc vacuum filters and belt vacuum filters are widely deployed in iron ore concentrators, copper flotation plants, coal preparation plants and large-scale tailings projects across Africa, Latin America, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

2. Working Principle

Slurry is fed into the filter trough. As the filter discs rotate through the slurry, the vacuum system draws liquid through the filter cloth, depositing a layer of solids on the disc surface. As the disc continues to rotate, the cake passes through a dewatering zone where more liquid is extracted under vacuum. At the discharge point, the vacuum is released and the cake is blown off and scraped into the discharge hopper. Filtrate water is collected in a vacuum receiver and pumped back to the process water system for recycling.

3. Key Advantages

  • Continuous 24-Hour Operation — No batch cycle downtime, ideal for large-scale concentrators running at high throughput.
  • High Throughput Capacity — Single unit handles 10 – 200 t/h of dry solids, suitable for large iron ore, copper and coal processing plants.
  • Uniform Cake Thickness — Consistent filtration performance across the entire disc or belt, stable product moisture.
  • Low Operating Cost — Vacuum pump power consumption is lower than pressure filtration for large volumes; minimal operator intervention.
  • Washable Cake Option — Belt vacuum filter allows cake washing during filtration, useful for soluble salt removal in lithium and chemical mineral applications.
  • Easy Maintenance — Filter cloth and media are accessible; disc rotation and scraper assembly are straightforward to service.

7. FAQ for Mining Vacuum Filter

Q1: What is the difference between a vacuum filter and a filter press?

A1: A vacuum filter operates continuously 24 hours a day under negative pressure, with higher throughput but slightly higher cake moisture (14% – 18%). A filter press works in batches under pressure, producing drier cake (10% – 16%) but with intermittent operation. Vacuum filters are preferred for large-scale plants; filter presses for fine or sticky minerals and tailings dry stacking.

Q2: Which type should I choose — disc or belt vacuum filter?

A2: Disc vacuum filter is compact and cost-effective for general concentrate dewatering (iron, copper, coal). Belt vacuum filter allows cake washing during filtration and is preferred when soluble impurities must be removed — typical for lithium concentrate, fluorspar and chemical minerals.

Q3: What cake moisture can I expect?

A3: Typical disc filter cake moisture is 14% – 18% for mineral concentrates. Belt filter achieves 12% – 16%. Actual moisture depends on particle size, slurry temperature, vacuum level and flocculant dosage. Finer particles generally require longer dewatering time.

Q4: Can vacuum filter handle high-altitude mine sites?

A4: Yes, but vacuum performance drops at high altitude due to lower atmospheric pressure. At altitudes above 3,000 m we recommend oversizing the vacuum pump and increasing filter area by 15% – 25% to compensate. We can design for high-altitude sites in Peru, Central Asia and the Andes.

Q5: How do I select the right filter area?

A5: We need: (1) dry solids output in t/h, (2) slurry solids content %, (3) feed particle size P80, and (4) required cake moisture. Our engineers will calculate the required filter area and recommend the correct model.

Q6: What is the typical power consumption?

A6: Vacuum filters are energy-efficient compared to pressure filtration. A 40 m² disc filter typically consumes 18.5 – 22 kW including vacuum pump, drive motor and agitator. Belt filters are slightly higher due to belt drive and vacuum pump combination.

Q7: Do you provide installation and after-sales service?

A7: Yes. We provide factory FAT inspection, containerized delivery, on-site installation guidance, operator training and long-term spare parts support (filter cloth, sectors, vacuum pump parts) for mining vacuum filter projects worldwide.
