Modular Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) Energy Storage System

Our modular Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) energy storage system is a long-duration, inherently safe containerized energy storage solution engineered for off-grid mine wind-storage hybrid microgrid projects. The system stores energy within liquid vanadium electrolyte, separating power stack and energy storage tanks. It supports long-duration discharge, ultra-long cycle life, no thermal runaway risk, and stable operation under harsh mining environments. This VRFB ESS can be fully integrated into our complete mine renewable EPC package together with wind & storage converter, isolation transformer, step-up transformer and medium/high voltage switchgear for long-duration energy shifting and mine microgrid stabilization.

System Connection & Working Principle

Main Purpose: The VRFB system captures surplus wind energy and delivers stable, long-duration power output for mining facilities during low wind periods. It offers multi-hour continuous power supply, wind power smoothing, black start capability and frequency/voltage stabilization for remote mine microgrids.

  • Upstream / DC Side of VRFB System: DC cables connect the VRFB stack to the DC bus of Wind & Storage Converter. The system charges and stores excess wind energy in vanadium electrolyte tanks.
  • Downstream Power Flow: DC power flows from VRFB stacks into Wind & Storage Converter for DC/AC conversion → Isolation Transformer → Step-up Transformer → MV / 35kV / 66kV Switchgear → Mine end loads (Ore processing plant, mine camp, critical safety equipment).

System Topology: Wind Turbine + Modular VRFB Energy Storage → Wind & Storage Converter → Isolation Transformer → Step-up Transformer → MV/35kV/66kV Switchgear → Mine Loads

FAQ

Q1: How does VRFB connect within mine wind-storage microgrid?

A: VRFB connects on DC side to DC bus of wind & storage converter. It stores surplus wind power in liquid vanadium electrolyte and releases continuous multi-hour power when wind generation drops. Power flows through converter, isolation transformer, step-up transformer and medium voltage switchgear to mining loads.

Q2: What is the key difference between VRFB and LiFePO4 container ESS?

A: VRFB is optimized for long-duration energy storage (4h+) with excellent intrinsic safety and 20+ year lifespan. LiFePO4 liquid cooled ESS is better for high peak power, fast response, short/medium duration discharge. For mine projects, VRFB is recommended if you require multi-hour continuous power and strict fire safety control.

Q3: Can we extend energy capacity after project commissioning?

A: Yes. VRFB power stacks and energy storage are decoupled. To increase discharge hours or total energy capacity, you only add electrolyte tanks and vanadium liquid without replacing power stacks.

Q4: Is VRFB suitable for hot desert mining environment?

A: Yes. The aqueous electrolyte system works stably in wide temperature range, no thermal runaway risk. We provide IP54/IP65 dust & sand protection for mining site deployment.

Q5: What certifications are available for mining tender?

A: IEC 62932, IEC 61508, CE test reports, FAT documents, operation manual and technical datasheet for tender submission.

Q6: Typical lead time?

A: Standard modular VRFB system: 12–16 weeks, subject to power/energy configuration and customized requirements.
